Lore
Agni is a Deity of sacred fire that manifests as living flame and ember; to the field naturalist he smells of warm ghee, cedar smoke and a faint incense sweetness, sounds like a steady, crackling chorus beneath low, reverent chant, and registers as an immediate, enveloping heat—amber tongues of light that render metal bright and shadow thin.
Origin: Vedic (Hindu) • Indian subcontinent
Classification: Deity
Field Notes
Observations
- A steady plume of saffron-tinged smoke rising from a hearth or altar, with the lingering aroma of clarified butter (ghee).
Encounter Advice
- taboo: Never extinguish or disrespect a consecrated flame; avoid spilling impure substances into the fire, speak reverently near an altar fire, and do not use sacred fire for malice or trivial spectacle.
- reverence: Honor with tending of the hearth, morning and evening offerings of ghee or grain, recitation of traditional mantras or hymns, and careful, attentive ritual (yajna/homa) performed with intent and purity.
- offering: Clarified butter (ghee), unbroken grains (rice, barley), dried wood or resin, and respectful recitation of hymns/mantras.
Abilities
- Sacrificial Flame (Agni's Mouth)Consumes offerings and transmutes them into divine essence carried to the gods through smoke and consecrated flame.
- Smoke-MessengerShapes smoke into sentient couriers that deliver petitions, secrets and the intent of rituals to specific deities.
- Purifying ConflagrationA ritual blaze that incinerates moral and physical impurity—disease, curse and sin—while sparing the sanctified and the sacrificer.
- Kindler of SoulsIgnites courage and spiritual ardor in worshippers by burning away doubt and spiritual lethargy like tinder.
Weaknesses
- Dousing of the YajnaExtinguishing or submerging a consecrated sacrificial fire severs Agni's channel to mortals and drastically reduces his influence.
- Withholding Ghee and SomaPersistent neglect of clarified butter (ghee) and soma offerings starves his sacrificial mouth and weakens his power to convey petitions.
- Rancid or Impure OfferingsPresenting rotten ghee, impure substances or cursed objects fouls the flame and can cause his fire to backlash upon worshippers.
