Anzu
Mesopotamianstorm-birdtablet loremonstersky predator
Lore
Anzu is a Hostile (Monster) — a colossal storm-bird with leonine shoulders, a ruff of bristling feathers and the slow, deliberate menace of a predator that rules the sky. Field notes record a palette of extremes: Smell: sharp ozone and the warm, metallic tang of scorched reeds as if lightning has been ground into the air. Sound: a deep, resonant wingbeat that rolls like distant thunder and a high, keening cry that sets smaller birds to silence. Temperature: the air tightens and warms around its passage, static prickling at the skin; stray gusts carry the dryness of midday heat and the sudden chill of a brewing storm. In daylight it casts a shadow like an eclipse; at dusk its silhouette is a ragged crown against the clouds.
Origin: Sumerian/Akkadian • Mesopotamia

Field Notes
Observations
- A sudden hush among other birds, the smell of ozone and scorched earth, and a circling shadow that blocks the sun.
Encounter Advice
- avoidance: Do not stand in open, exposed high ground. Seek low cover beneath dense foliage or within reed-thatched shelters; avoid making abrupt movements that draw attention. Keep small flocks quiet and hidden until the shadow passes.
- defense: If engagement is unavoidable, use concentrated fire or projectiles aimed at its eyes and wings to disrupt lift; noise and coordinated diversion can force it to abandon a target. Ritual talismans or the aid of a stronger guardian figure (local lore: a temple-sent champion) have historically been used to break its hold.
- offering: No reliable appeasement is recorded; returning stolen talismans or artefacts associated with storm rites may weaken its obsession with a prize and buy time.
Abilities
- Seize the Tablet of DestiniesPhysically absconds with the Tablet of Destinies, temporarily granting Anzu the authority to issue binding commands over gods and fates.
- Wings of the StormUnfurls tempestuous wings that summon gale-force winds and lightning strikes capable of scattering armies and toppling fortifications.
- Usurper's DecreeWhile clutching the Tablet, issues a short-lived divine edict that overrides lesser divine wills and compels mortal rulers.
Weaknesses
- Loss of the Tablet of DestiniesDeprived of the Tablet, Anzu's stolen authority collapses and its supernatural influence and resilience are drastically reduced.
- Sharur (Ninurta's Mace)The enchanted, shape-changing mace Sharur—wielded by Ninurta/Ningirsu—is fabled to wound, disorient, or unmake Anzu when struck.
- Heroic Binding NetsSpecially wrought binding nets and snares used by Ninurta can entangle even the storm-wings and pin Anzu for capture.
