Bhut Lore & Origins
Bhut Encounter Protocols & Field Notes
- A localized, persistent cold spot where candles snuff or small flames gutter, often accompanied by the wet-earth/jasmine scent.
- avoidance: Do not pursue or call back a presence; retreat to well-lit, communal spaces and avoid entering abandoned rooms alone. Do not disturb burial grounds or speak loudly of the dead in isolated places.
- defense: Keep a steady flame or lamp, place salt or ash across thresholds, ring bells or create sound to break stillness, and seek assistance from community elders for rites that are appropriate to local custom. Iron objects and strong scents (smoke, incense) are traditionally used to discourage a bhut.
- offering: Optional and to be used with caution: small, simple offerings left at a threshold (rice or water) are said in some tales to appease a wandering spirit for a night.
Bhut Abilities & Powers
- Life-Leeching PossessionInvade a living body to siphon vitality, with a folkloric preference for vulnerable, pregnant women, or the recently bereaved until the host wastes away.
- Mother's Call (Voice Mimicry)Mimic the voice of a loved one—often a parent—to lure children or isolated travellers into danger or away from protective sights.
- Gravebound ManifestationDraw strength from disturbed graves and crossroads to partially materialize at night, becoming tangible enough to scratch, steal, or drag victims.
Weaknesses & How to Defeat the Bhut
- Pind (rice ball) OfferingA consecrated rice-ball left for the restless dead can placate, bind, or redirect a bhut toward the offering instead of a living victim.
- Hanuman Chalisa RecitationDevotional chanting—most famously the Hanuman Chalisa—breaks bhut possessions and forces the spirit to retreat or lose cohesion.
- Sunrise ExposureProlonged exposure to dawn and direct sunlight disperses a bhut's material hold and greatly weakens its ability to possess or manifest.
