Black Shuck

Black Shuck is a spectral hound recorded across the marshes and lanes of East Anglia: a large, ink-black dog the size of a calf with a coat that seems to drink light and eyes like smoldering coals. Smell: a sharp tang of ozone and wet wool, as if lightning had passed through peat. Sound: a single, low bark or the slow scrape of heavy paws that seems to come from all directions at once. Temperature: an unnatural cold that fogs breath and makes metal bite the skin — not natural frost, but a presence that draws warmth away. Field notes often mention sudden silence in birds and a lingering faint scorch on wooden doorways where it has been seen.
