Frost Giants Lore & Origins
Frost Giants are colossal, ice-wreathed giants of the high frozen wastes, presented here in the tone of a field naturalist: they move with glacier-slow deliberation, shoulders rimed in hoarfrost and beards studded with icicles. Smell: the air around them carries the metallic tang of ozone and cold stone, with a faint underscent of crushed pine and old smoke. Sound: approach is heralded by a low, creaking groan like ice under pressure, the dull percussion of vast footsteps, and an occasional wind-bent bellow that carries for miles. Temperature: their presence drops the ambient temperature noticeably — breath crystallizes, fine rime feathers out from exposed gear, and moisture in the air locks into glittering crystals. Up close they appear as pale, blue-tinged skin stretched over powerful limbs, often wearing furs of strange beasts and trinkets of carved bone; they observe with a slow intelligence rather than mindless rage.
Origin: Norse • Niflheim / Scandinavia
Classification: Giant (Jötunn)
Frost Giants Encounter Protocols & Field Notes
Observations
- A string of enormous prints with radiating hairline cracks in the snow and a shimmering halo of frost where the air has been chilled most intensely.
Encounter Advice
- avoidance: Avoid open, exposed plateaus at dawn and dusk when patrols are likeliest; travel under continuous canopy when possible, keep to valleys where their silhouette cannot be easily sighted, and never leave fires or food where they can follow scent.
- defense: Prioritize warmth, mobility, and constricted terrain: establish defended positions with multiple smaller entrances (so the giant cannot bring full weight to bear), keep large fires and heated stones to create barriers they hesitate to cross, and use ranged tactics to distract or blind (smoke, reflective surfaces). Collapse snow bridges or lead them onto unstable ice rather than attempt head-on brawls.
- offering: Optional: a carefully placed cache of smoked meat and bright metal trinkets left at a distance can buy time or divert attention; do so only when escape routes are secured.
Frost Giants Abilities & Powers
- World-Ice ShapingCalls on the primordial rime of Ymir to freeze seas, heave up ice fortresses, and forge weapons of living frost in an instant.
- Glacial BreathExhales a concentrated blizzard that sears warmth from skin and plates armor into brittle rime in moments.
- Cryostatic BindingWeaves rime-chords that lock limbs and anchors to the ground, binding gods and men alike until the bonds are melted or broken.
- Ice-Boulder SlingHurls hewn chunks of world-ice — whole keel-sized bergs or mountain shards — that smash fortifications and carve glaciers.
Weaknesses & How to Defeat the Frost Giants
- Surtr's Flame (Searing Fire)Sustained volcanic or sun-level fire unravels their rime-born flesh and weapons, causing rapid collapse and mortification.
- Oath-binding & Divine ContractTrickery or legally invoked oaths enforced by the Æsir can bind or compel them, as myths repeatedly show.
