Harpies are a Monster: lean, winged humanoids with hooked beaks and long, ragged feathers—predatory and driven by hunger or spite. Smell: a sharp, metallic tang mixed with salt and the stale musk of old nests; hints of damp leather and spent flame. Sound: a layered, high-pitched shriek that rises and breaks like wind through thin bone, undercut by the soft, paper-thin slap of many wings. Temperature: the air around them feels taut and warm, like standing near a dry, summer gust—breathless and pressing. Field notes: they move in circling flurries, favoring cliffs, ruined watchtowers and coastal scrub; when disturbed they descend in sudden, chaotic sweeps, preferring to harry and steal rather than grapple for prolonged combat.

  • A sudden, tight circling shadow accompanied by rising, thin shrieks and the discovery of scattered feathers snagged on branches or torn cloth where food was left.
Encounter Advice
  • avoidance: Do not expose food or bright fabrics in the open; travel under dense canopy or indoors at dawn and dusk; avoid areas with fresh feather scatter and unattended meals. Move quietly and avoid drawing attention with sudden light or reflective surfaces.
  • defense: Shelter under dense cover or inside sturdy structures; use smoke, controlled fire or strong odors (pitch, brimstone, or tar) to disrupt flight paths; iron tools and long poles keep them at bay—aim to deny them easy snatching angles.
