Kapre
"In Philippine, Kapre is a cryptid linked to forest spirit."
Kapre Lore & Origins
Kapre Encounter Protocols & Field Notes
- The unmistakable scent of pipe or cigar smoke hanging in still forest air, often with a single, oversized footprint pressed into soft soil.
- behavior: Primarily nocturnal and territorial; the Kapre claims large, ancient trees (mango, balete, acacia) as perches and will linger in one place for seasons. It is curious about humans, sometimes lingers near homesteads, and can play tricks to teach respect for its domain. While not bloodthirsty, it responds poorly to slights — theft of its spot, cutting its tree, or overt aggression can provoke persistent harassment or leading travelers astray.
- interaction: Approach with quiet respect: do not storm the clearing or try to climb its tree. Speak softly if you must, leave a small, unobtrusive offering at the tree's base, and retreat without staring up into the canopy. Avoid sudden movements and never damage the tree it inhabits; calm, deferential behavior reduces risk of conflict.
- offering: Small tokens left at the base of the claimed tree — hand-rolled cigars or local tobacco, a pinch of sugar or rice, and small coins — are traditional ways to placate or acknowledge its presence.
Kapre Abilities & Powers
- Ember VeilExhales thick, intoxicating cigar smoke that induces disorientation, drowsiness, and mild hallucinations in those who inhale it.
- Treebound CamouflageMelds with its balete tree to become effectively invisible and immobile while sensing intruders through roots and bark.
- Pathway ConfusionWarps a traveler's sense of direction at night, causing them to walk in circles or return to the kapre's tree.
Weaknesses & How to Defeat the Kapre
- Severed BaleteIf its host balete tree is cut down or its roots destroyed, the kapre is unmoored, loses most of its power, and can be mortally exposed.
- Direct SunlightBright daylight disperses its smoke cloak and significantly weakens its concealment and magical influence.
- Taken CigarHaving its cigarette or tobacco stolen breaks its smoke-based abilities temporarily and provokes a furious, reckless reaction.
