Krampus Lore & Origins

Krampus is a hostile Fae of Alpine tradition: a hulking, horned humanoid wrapped in matted dark fur and rattling chains. Smell: the air near him carries a sour mix of woodsmoke, damp fur, and cold iron. Sound: the first warning is metal on metal—chains and small bells—joined to the rasp of cloven hooves and a low, breathy snarl. Temperature: his presence draws the warmth from the air; nights near him taste of frost and the edges of things go numb. Written in the style of a field naturalist, these are the consistent sensory markers to watch for when tracking winter terrors in mountain towns.

Krampus Encounter Protocols & Field Notes

Observations
  • Tangled chains or a line of small bells left jingling at a doorway, paired with a neat pile of birch twigs or scorched fir needles.
Encounter Advice
  • avoidance: If signs appear, withdraw indoors immediately to a well-lit, occupied building. Keep children accounted for, lock exterior doors, and avoid isolated pathways or unlit thresholds after dusk.
  • defense: Noise and fire are your first line: ring bells, beat pots, and sustain vocal disturbance to break his approach. Maintain open flame(s) or torches at entry points and display iron (tools, nails) visibly—folklore records iron and communal light as effective deterrents. If confronted, retreat as a group and refuse to open the door to bangs or rattling.
  • offering: Optional historical appeasements include leaving a small bowl with coal or strong schnapps at the threshold—enough to distract or buy a night's peace, not a guarantee of safety.

Krampus Abilities & Powers

  • Child-Sack Abduction
Sweeps naughty children into a demonic sack or basket to carry them off as punishment or to the netherworld.
  • Rute Birch Lash
Wields a bundle of birch switches ('Rute') to brutally birch and mark misbehaving children as retribution.
  • Chain Rattle
Shakes iron chains and bells that summon dread and can manifest spectral links to bind doors or limbs.
  • Horned Visage of Terror
Assumes a horned, bestial appearance that induces paralyzing fear in children and unsettles entire households.

Weaknesses & How to Defeat the Krampus

  • Saint Nicholas' Blessing
The presence or blessing of Saint Nicholas negates Krampus's violent authority and compels him into a subordinate role.
  • Protected Hearth/Threshold
A home with a tended hearth, lit threshold, or specific protective rites prevents Krampus from entering or acting within.
