Kuchisake-onna

Kuchisake-onna is a Yōkai encountered at twilight and in the quiet pockets of towns — a woman draped in ordinary clothing whose face is concealed by a surgical mask. Sightings are marked by an unnatural chill, the faint tang of antiseptic and cold metal in the air, and the soft, deliberate whisper of a question. She moves without the usual human cadence: steps measured, voice small but insistent. Up close there is an odd absence of body heat, and the cadence of her approach can be mistaken for the rustle of a coat in the wind. Field notes: she prefers edges — alleys, schoolyards after dark, and bus stops where light thins and people thin out.
