Makara

Makara is a Deity and guardian beast often depicted as a composite sea-creature—crocodile jaw, elephant trunk, fish tail—stationed at river mouths, temple thresholds, and the mouths of sanctified waters. In the field it announces itself like a coastal weather change: smell of brine sharpened by lotus and incense, a metallic spray that clings to clothes; sound is a low, resonant slap of water on stone and a distant, hollow bellow that seems to come from beneath the current; temperature around its favored haunts is cool and humid, shifting to sun-warmed dampness where eddies hold heat like tide pools. Observing a Makara is less about a single sighting and more about the choreography of water, stone, and offering—how foam gathers in a crescent, how temple lamps bow to the wind.
