- An independent shadow on the ceiling or a head appearing at an unexpected angle above shōji (sliding screens).
- mischief: Prefers minor, uncanny pranks: peering at sleepers from rafters, borrowing small domestic items and returning them oddly arranged, imitating a household member's voice to startle the living, and leaving a single silk thread where it passed.
- interaction: Do not shout or glare; sudden threats provoke alarm rather than submission. Speak softly and refuse to be baited into frantic pursuit. Offer a small, respectful token (rice, a cup of night tea, or a hairpin placed on a low table) and retreat to a calm corner; many Rokurokubi will inspect offerings, cause a mild disturbance, then withdraw before dawn.

- Ofuda Exorcism by an onmyōjiA trained onmyōji can drive off or bind a Rokurokubi using ofuda talismans and ritual rites.
- Dawn LightExposure to direct morning sunlight forces the neck to retract and halts its nocturnal transformations.
- Sacred Rope (shimenawa) BindingA properly placed shimenawa or similar sacred binding around a sleeping space can prevent the neck from passing through thresholds.
