Vodyanoy

Vodyanoy is a Hostile water spirit most often reported at slow river bends, millponds, and shaded oxbows. As a field archivist I record it as an impression more than a body: an oily darkness that distorts light, the sense of something twice-submerged moving just beneath the surface. Smell: a wet, green rot—algae, old reeds, and a faint metallic tang like deep river mud. Sound: low, rhythmic bubble-chanting, the creak of submerged timbers, and sometimes a muffled splash that comes without wind. Temperature: an abrupt, clinging cold that steals heat from skin and air within a few paces of the bank. Encounters are best logged quietly; witnesses describe the spirit as an absence that presses outward, not only a figure that can be struck.
