Frigg: The Silent Seeress
The Queen of Asgard
Odin is the All-Father, the seeker of wisdom who sacrifices his eye for knowledge. Frigg is his equal, but her power is innate. She is the highest goddess of the Aesir, functioning as the Queen of Asgard. Unlike Odin, who constantly questions the dead and the giants for information, Frigg possesses omniscient foresight. She knows the destiny of all beings. However, she operates under a divine restriction: she cannot, or will not, change it. She knows the end comes, and she prepares for it in silence.
The Oath of Immunity
The limit of her silence was tested by the fate of her son, Baldr. Knowing he was destined to die, she broke protocol and intervened. She extracted an oath from every object in creation—fire, water, iron, stone, earth, trees, sicknesses, beasts, birds, poisons, and snakes. All swore never to harm Baldr. This created a field of invulnerability around the god, making him immune to all physical damage.
The Mistake
Frigg's intervention had a single flaw. She considered the mistletoe too young and harmless to swear the oath. Loki identified this oversight. He fashioned a dart from the plant and guided the hand of the blind god Hodr to throw it. Because the mistletoe had not sworn, it pierced Baldr's chest, killing him instantly. The attempt to cheat fate only catalyzed the onset of Ragnarök.
The Grief of Fensalir
Frigg resides in Fensalir (The Hall of Marshlands). It is a place of mourning and memory. While Odin prepares for war with the Einherjar, Frigg spins the clouds and weeps. Her tears are said to turn into the berries of the mistletoe (or pearls/gold in other traditions). She represents the aspect of wisdom that accepts the inevitable.
The Final Warning
Prophecy is a heavy burden. If you seek to know your future, remember Frigg. Knowing what happens does not mean you can stop it; sometimes, it is better not to know.
