Heimdall: The Watchman

The White God

Heimdall (The Shining God) corresponds to the concept of Absolute Vigilance. He is the designated sentry of the Aesir, stationed at Himinbjörg (The Cliffs of Heaven) where the Bifröst bridge connects Asgard to Midgard. Unlike the other gods who feast or sleep, Heimdall exists in a state of perpetual observation. He requires less sleep than a bird and drinks only mead, eschewing the distractions of food and rest.

Hyper-Sensory Perception

His biology is optimized for surveillance.

  • Sight: He can see for 100 leagues (approx. 300 miles) equally well by night or day.
  • Hearing: His auditory acquity is infinite—he can hear grass growing on the earth and wool growing on sheep.
  • Foreknowledge: Like the Vanir, he possesses a degree of prophetic oversight.

The Gjallarhorn

He carries the Gjallarhorn (Yelling Horn). This is not a musical instrument. It is a cosmological alarm system. It is buried under the roots of Yggdrasil for safekeeping. When the enemies of the gods (The Giants, The Dead, The Wolf) launch their final assault at Ragnarök, Heimdall will blow the horn. The sound will be loud enough to be heard in all nine worlds, waking the gods and the dead for the final battle.

The Final Duel

Heimdall and Loki are destined enemies. Loki represents Chaos and Trickery. Heimdall represents Order and Observation. At Ragnarök, they will face each other on the field of Vigrid. They will kill one another simultaneously, symbolizing the mutual destruction of order and chaos at the end of the cycle.

The Final Warning

If you are trying to sneak into the realm of the gods, thinking the darkness will hide you, stop. It won't work; he saw you before you started.
