Lore

Chenoa is a small, marsh-bound spirit often seen at the edge of springs and reedbeds as dusk thins into night. It appears as a pale dove-shaped silhouette wreathed in vapor, moving with the careful patience of slow water. Smell: a cool riverbank mix of wet clay, crushed moss and the faint powder of wildflower pollen. Sound: a soft, layered coo that hangs like a bell-note over reeds; its wings whisper like pages turned in a closed book. Temperature: the air near Chenoa always feels cooler, shaded and damp — the sort of chill you feel stepping into a cave opening.
Origin: Modern folk-revival (game setting) • Eastern Woodlands (game setting)

Field Notes

Observations
  • A neat spiral of small, pearly white feathers laid on damp earth or stone, each feather beaded with dew that does not dry by midday.
Encounter Advice
  • behavior: Mostly solitary and crepuscular. Chenoa patrols freshwater margins, inspects springs and reed clumps, and appears more often before storms. It is chiefly a guardian of clean water: it will nudge animals and travellers away from poisoned or stagnant pools and will retrieve shiny, smooth objects washed into streams. It does not pursue prey and avoids loud, crowded places.
  • interaction: Approach slowly and without bright light; sudden movements will startle it into mist. Soft humming or a quiet voice tends to calm its presence. Offerings of clear water left at the edge of a spring or a single white feather placed gently on a flat stone may encourage it to linger. Do not attempt to seize or chase—contact causes it to dissolve into fog and can leave a person momentarily disoriented.
  • offering: A shallow bowl of fresh spring water, a cluster of milkweed seeds, or a single white feather placed quietly at the water's edge.

Abilities

  • False-Dawn Veil
She summons a wash of pale dawn-light threaded with drifting feathers that lulls sentient beings into dreamlike stupor and obscures true paths for up to an hour.
  • Omen-Feather Mark
Chenoa places a single luminescent white feather on a person's brow to bind their fate—guiding them with gentle portents or opening them to prophetic visions depending on intent.
  • Hearthflight
A whispered last word is turned into a glowing feather-carrier she sends across miles to ease passage or deliver a named message to the living.

Weaknesses

  • Severed Feather
A feather plucked from one she marked and kept by another severs Chenoa's tether to that person's life-thread and can be burned to force her away.
  • Cold Iron
Direct contact with iron disrupts her feather-light magic and prevents formation of the False-Dawn Veil.
  • Bright Noon
Sustained exposure to zenith sunlight dispels her illusions and weakens her magic until dusk.
