Lore
Coyote is a lithe, cunning Fae often told in the shape of a slim, red-tinged canid; as a field naturalist might note, it moves with the economy of a predator but the timing of a prankster. Smell: sun-warmed fur with dust, sage smoke, and the faint metallic tang of scavenged things. Sound: a chorus of sharp yips and liquid yodels, laughter-like calls that rise at dusk and curl into the night. Temperature: warm-blooded and sun-warmed at the flank, yet somehow colder at the tips of ears and tail—as if mischief cools the edges. Observed at the edge of camps and creosote flats, Coyote can blur the line between animal and spirit, always watching with bright, calculating eyes.

Field Notes
Observations
- A distinctive broken yip that sounds like a question followed by a chuckle; paired with scattered, neatly stripped scraps near a traveled footpath.
Encounter Advice
- mischief: Tends to steal small comforts, rearrange supplies, lead a lone traveler along a wrong ridge, or trade riddles for favors; its tricks follow a personal logic and often teach a lesson rather than simple harm.
- interaction: Approach with humor and caution: do not challenge or mock. Offer a small, respectful token (a song, a bright scrap of cloth, or a bit of dried meat) and speak plainly when asking favors; bargains are literal and will be kept to the letter. If outwitted, expect a prank rather than malice.
- offering: A small, respectful token—dried meat, a bright scrap of cloth, or a short song; customs vary by community.
