Lore

Frau Perchta is a winter boundary spirit and household overseer whose presence is felt more than seen: she moves along the line between old year and new, checking stitches and hearths. Smell: a mix of cold smoke, damp wool and faint iron; Sound: the soft rat-tat of a spindle, the whisper of starched skirts, or the distant clatter of bells from a procession; Temperature: an immediate, clean chill like the first hard frost that raises crystals on the sill. Field notes from alpine farmsteads place her visits on the Twelve Nights and Epiphany, when thresholds are watched and chores judged with an almost clerical exactness.
Origin: Alpine (Austro-Bavarian / Bohemian folklore) • Alps (Austria, Bavaria, Czech borderlands)
Classification: Deity (House/Threshold Spirit)

Field Notes

Observations
  • A single silvery thread or a pattern of star-shaped frost on the doorstep — the usual sign she has passed.
Encounter Advice
  • taboo: Do not leave household work—spinning, weaving, or food preparations—unfinished through the Twelve Nights; do not mock or show contempt for the old customs; never sweep a doorstep clean of its last straw during her vigil.
  • reverence: Leave a bowl of porridge or milk by the hearth, hang a tidy bundle of new wool or straw over the lintel, complete one last stitch before dusk on Epiphany, and greet any midnight procession with respectful silence.
  • offering: Warm porridge, a skein of new wool, a small coin placed near the spindle, or simply a well-tended hearth and finished work.

Abilities

  • Weaver's Judgment
Performs a nightly inspection of a household's spinning and craft; those proven industrious receive blessing while the idle are marked for punishment.
  • Belly-Slit and Straw-Fill
Punitively rips open the bellies of the lazy and fills them with straw, husks or refuse, leaving them maimed, cursed or grotesquely transformed.
  • Silver-Palm Blessing
Leaves a silver coin or sprinkles bright flakes in the palm of dutiful spinners, conferring protection or household prosperity for the year.

Weaknesses

  • Porridge Offering (Grütze)
A bowl of millet porridge set out on the Twelve Nights placates her and nullifies her claim on the household for the year.
  • Proof of Industry (Finished Spinning)
Displaying finished cloth, the completed spindle or other clear proof that duties were done removes her cause to punish the household.
