Lore
Gorgon is a Monster: a low, sinewed silhouette crowned with a writhing nest of serpents where hair should be. From a field-naturalist vantage it reads like a predator shaped by stone and sun—muscular shoulders, scaly hide, and a steady, deliberate breathing. Smell: a sharp, mineral tang of warm, sun-baked rock mixed with a faint reptilian musk. Sound: the constant, impatient rustle and wet hiss of many snakes, punctuated by the brittle chit of tiny stones shifting as life is turned to statue. Temperature: the creature itself gives off a dry, oppressive warmth, like standing too close to a kiln; areas of petrification nearby are cold and brittle in contrast. Observations note the uncanny silence of fauna in its vicinity and the sudden, scattered shards of shattered sculpture where animals or small objects once stood.

Field Notes
Observations
- Rings of newly-formed stone fragments or petrified small animals, and the distinctive chorus of hissing snakes that does not belong to any normal den.
Encounter Advice
- avoidance: Do not meet the eyes. Travel with polished surfaces (mirrors, polished bronze) to observe indirectly; work from covered reflections or through periscopes. Avoid isolated clearings and never approach any compact circle of fresh stone.
- defense: If engagement is unavoidable, employ indirect sight (reflections), long-range tactics, and distraction — decoys, smoke, or angled mirrors to break direct line of gaze. Teams should coordinate one blinded or shielded observer to guide ranged strikes; disabling the serpentine crown or forcing retreat is preferable to prolonged close combat.
- offering: Small polished bronze tokens or mirrored trinkets left at the edge of its territory have been recorded to distract or placate curious specimens; offerings are unreliable and never guarantee safety.
Abilities
- Petrifying GazeA direct look into a Gorgon's eyes instantaneously crystallizes organic flesh into unyielding stone.
- Severed Head WeaponEven when decapitated, a Gorgon's head retains its petrifying gaze and can be wielded as a ranged deterrent or trophy-weapon.
- Living SerpentsHer hair is made of independent, sentient snakes that bite, constrict, and act as scouts or manipulators at her command.
- Winged AmbushMany Gorgons possess leathery wings that enable sudden aerial dives, rapid repositioning, and surprise attacks from above.
Weaknesses
- Reflected Observation (Polished Shield / Mirror)Observing a Gorgon only via a polished reflection allows safe approach and can be used to avoid or redirect her petrifying gaze.
- Decapitation (Mortal Individuals)Mortal Gorgons such as Medusa can be killed by beheading, though the detached head remains dangerous; this vulnerability does not apply to immortal sisters.
- Divine Consecration (Athena's Relics)Artifacts or spaces consecrated by Athena or endowed with similar divine sanction repel, bind, or negate a Gorgon's freedom to act within them.
