Lore

Haetae is a Deity-guardian — a leonine, horned sentinel of stone and law from Korean lore. Field notes record its presence as unmistakably terrestrial and purposeful: smell of warm incense mingled with rain on hot stone; sound a low, measured clack or toll, as if a temple bell were translated into footfall; temperature dry-warm and dense, like powerful muscle sealed beneath a mineral pelt. It behaves like a living monument: slow to move, instant in judgment, carrying the weight of civic order rather than appetite for flesh.

Field Notes

Observations
  • A sudden hush and the scent of incense and wet stone; nearby embers and small flames often fail to take hold when it stands watch.
Encounter Advice
  • taboo: Never lie, steal, or defile its likeness or precincts. Do not place ill-gotten goods at its feet or break vows in its presence — such acts are said to invite its judgment.
  • reverence: Show respect by keeping its shrine clean, offering incense or plain white rice, and making truthful oaths before it. A formal bow at the threshold and quiet speech are proper; maintenance of the site honors its duty to protect.
  • offering: Plain white rice, incense, clean water, or a written vow. Simple, unadorned gifts of sincerity calm its attention.

Abilities

  • Scales of Judgment
Its scaled flank acts as a supernatural tribunal that reveals lies and corrupt intent, petrifying or paralyzing those found guilty within its gaze.
  • Flame-Queller
It inhales living fire and exhales a choking, sootless mist that extinguishes conflagrations and seals burning embers into harmless stone.
  • Horn of Edict
Its single horn carves binding wards into earth and stone, creating instantaneous bulwarks against floods, riots, or unlawful entry.

Weaknesses

  • Perjury
Widespread false testimony and official corruption in its jurisdiction sap its vigilance and blunt its Scales of Judgment.
  • Removal of its Statue
Forcibly removing or destroying a haetae guardian statue severs the local ward it projects until rites are performed.
  • Iron Binding Chain
A ritual iron chain inscribed with forged seals can temporarily bind its horn and mute its warding magics.
