Harpy

Lore
Harpy is a Fae of wind and hunger: a compact, winged humanoid with a raptor's beak, hooked talons, and feathers that bristle like a storm front. Smell: an acrid tang of salt, raptor musk and old brine that lingers on clothing. Sound: a sharp, triple-note keening that carries like gulls but cuts higher, followed by the wet slap of wings and the rasp of talons on stone. Temperature: encounters begin with a rush of warm, dry air—the predator's breath—then sudden chilling drafts under their wings. Field naturalist notes record them hunting from patrol heights, circling in loose packs and preferring exposed ledges, coastal paths, and any traveller isolated from shelter.

Observations
- A repeated three-note keening at dusk and parallel talon-scrapes along cliff ledges or rooftops.
Encounter Advice
- avoidance: Avoid exposed ridgelines and solitary travel near cliffs or shorelines at dawn and dusk; travel in groups, keep to sheltered gullies, conceal food and strong scents, and do not linger near carrion or isolated wreckage.
- defense: Prioritize preventing flight: use nets, long poles, or lines to snag wings; create blinding smoke or flash reflective surfaces to disorient their dive; keep fires high and erratic to break glide paths; constant movement and loud continuous noise (bell clusters, drumming) confuse pack tactics. If forced to fight, target wings and balance rather than gore—disrupting flight usually ends the threat.
- offering: Salted fish or a bright iron trinket tossed well away from camp may distract an investigating harpy long enough for escape; small, fast distractions are preferable to attempts at friendly gestures.
Abilities
- Sky‑SnatchSeizes a living or freshly killed victim with taloned hands and carries it aloft to be stolen, suffocated, or delivered to carrion, removing it from combat or life.
- Gale WailEmits a piercing, wind‑shaping cry that disorients, causes nausea, and hurls razor gusts at foes for short bursts of area disruption.
- Feast‑DefilePollutes stored food and offerings by strewing carrion and foulness, rendering provisions inedible and inciting communal disgust.
Weaknesses
- Boreadic PursuitHistorically driven off when relentlessly chased by winged heroes (e.g., Zetes and Calaïs) who deny them escape routes.
- Divine DecreeCompelled to obey explicit commands or bans from greater gods and can be halted or recalled by a clear divine edict.
