Lore
Hel is a Deity (Underworld) observed where shore meets shadow: fjord mouths, burial mounds and the threshold between hearth and hollow. She is less a living figure than a presiding presence—quiet, patient, and inexorable, an authority over those who pass without heroic blaze. Smell: damp peat, salt, and a faint metallic tang as of old iron. Sound: the distant drip of water and the slow creak of timbers, underlain by a hush of whispered names. Temperature: an unyielding cold that numbs the breath and leaves a sheen of frost on hair and stone.

Field Notes
Observations
- A sudden, complete hush among birds and beasts and a curl of brackish peat-smoke on the air.
Encounter Advice
- taboo: Do not disturb burials or take grave goods; do not mock or barter lightly with the realm of the dead; keep solemnity at thresholds.
- reverence: Make simple rites at the boundary—speak the departed's name, leave a cup of ale or water and a small carved token, honour oaths and boundaries.
- offering: A cup of ale or water, a bit of bread, a small carved token (comb or wooden charm), and a word of the dead's name.
Abilities
- Claim of HelheimPlaces a death-seal on the recently deceased or mortally afflicted that drags the soul to Helheim, overriding ordinary bonds of life for those who die of sickness, age, or dishonor.
- Half-Form VisageReveals her half-living, half-rotted face to a victim, sapping warmth and will and inducing rapid chill, lethargy, and blight in those who behold her.
- Warden of Unhonored BonesMarshal dead servants from Helheim—especially the unavenged and unburied—binding them to her will as silent wardens and mournful spies.
Weaknesses
- Claim Limited by ValorCannot claim souls reserved for the honored slain (those taken by Odin or Freyja to Valhalla/Fólkvangr), leaving her dependent on the living's manner of death.
- Bound to HelheimHer influence and magical potency are strongest within Helheim and markedly diminished under sunlight or in the halls of the living.
- Oaths and BargainsCompulsive to sworn bargains and cosmic decrees—formal oaths, ransom rituals, or legally binding sorceries can restrict her actions.
