Lore
Hewi-Yooku is a cryptid of the riverlands — a low, lithe creature that slips between root and current like a dark current given shape. Smell: a clean, mineral scent of wet stone and cold iron, with the faint green tang of algae. Sound: a hollow, staccato bark that carries across water and the soft rasp of trailing reeds against its flank. Temperature: the air chills noticeably where it passes, leaving a damp, shade-cool bite on the skin. Field notes describe a slick, moss-flecked pelt, webbed paws, and eyes that gleam low above the waterline, reflecting moonlight like lanterns.

Field Notes
Observations
- A crescent of disturbed reeds and a line of paired, shallow, webbed prints that begin and end at the water's edge.
Encounter Advice
- behavior: Primarily nocturnal and territorial along streams and oxbows. It patrols a single stretch of water, investigating reflections and small disturbances. Generally avoids open ground and will withdraw into submerged tangles if given space. Becomes defensive if cornered or if its nesting root-mat is disturbed.
- interaction: Approach slowly and low to the ground at the water's edge; do not block its channel. Offer a small, river-smoothed stone or a live freshwater fish placed at the margin and step back. Avoid sudden movements and direct lunging; if it bares its teeth or emits a long, hollow bark, retreat calmly and give the bank back to it.
- offering: A small, river-polished stone, a length of blue thread tied around a twig, or a single freshwater fish left on the bank.
Abilities
- Reed-Mask BreathstealHewi-Yooku plucks a living mask from marsh reeds and presses it to a victim's face, siphoning their breath and speaking their lost name aloud to bind their will to the fog.
- Fog of Remembered NamesIt exhales a rolling mist that reveals personal memories to anyone who inhales it, causing confusion and making companions turn on one another.
- Cattail MarionettesRoots and stalks animate into grasping hands that entangle and drag the caught toward deeper water if not cut free with a braided cord.
Weaknesses
- Braided Cattail CordA cord of three freshly braided cattails wound around Hewi-Yooku's reed-mask pins it inert for hours.
- Recital of True NameSpeaking a victim's true name back to them while blocking the mask forces the stolen breath to return and breaks the bind.
- Sunlight and Dry EarthDirect, unbroken sunlight or setting its feet upon dry, clay soil causes the reed-mask to crumble and the spirit to retreat.
