Lore

Iara is a Fae water spirit often described as a river-dweller whose presence is sensed long before she is seen: the air turns damp and sharp, smelling of river mud and crushed aquatic plants; her voice is a layered, reedy melody that mimics water over stone and carries unnervingly clear across currents; the temperature falls to a slick, river-cold that clings to skin and clothing, leaving the world oddly hushed.

Field Notes

Observations
  • An impossible, haunting song seeming to rise from beneath the water, often paired with sudden wet, slippered footprints or freshly disturbed plants along the bank.
Encounter Advice
  • avoidance: Do not answer, hum, or mimic the song. Retreat to higher ground and break line of sight; avoid lone swims at dusk or dawn. Use smoke or bright light to disperse the voice and keep groups together near shore.
  • defense: Interrupt the melody with loud noise (shouts, banging metal) or create smoke/fire to scatter focus. If someone is being pulled toward the water, prioritize pulling them to shore and cutting any grasping hands; folklore advises carrying iron or other sharp, mundane tools to create distance and break the spell.
  • offering: Small shore offerings—fresh river fish, a ribbon tied to a reed, or a polished pendant left at the water's edge—are said in some tales to placate or delay her attention.

Abilities

  • Iara's Luring Lilt
A haunting river-song that enthralls listeners, replacing their will with an irresistible urge to approach the water and follow her voice.
  • Golden Comb's Mirror
She combs her hair with a gleaming comb and uses the reflected image to cast intimate illusions of lost loves or false shorelines to mislead and isolate prey.
  • Riverbed Anchor
When she seizes a victim she weaves living aquatic plants and silt into binding anchors that pin and drown without noisy struggle.

Weaknesses

  • Removed Comb
Seizing her golden comb breaks her immediate glamour and weakens her control until the comb is returned.
  • Answered Name
Shouting a victim's true name back toward the shore can snap them from the enchantment and sever Iara's hold.
  • Forged Metal
Contact with iron or steel disrupts her binding of plants and illusions, making physical harm possible.
