Lore

Ikuchi is a Cryptid sea serpent reported along coastal Japan — a long, sinuous mass that glides over hulls and leaves a slow, clinging trail. In the field it announces itself by smell, sound, and temperature: Smell — a sharp, oily tang mixed with brine and old tar; Sound — a prolonged, wet dragging like rope running through water and the soft, intermittent patter of heavy beads falling onto timber; Temperature — strangely warm and clammy to the touch, as if the creature carries the slow heat of muscle beneath slick skin. Recorded encounters read like navigation notes: a ship rendered sluggish by sticky residue, hands slick with dark film, and night watches haunted by a distant, sucking cadence.

Field Notes

Observations
  • A continuous, slow rain of dark, viscous droplets across decks and a long glossy streak along the water’s surface — the unmistakable oil-trail of an Ikuchi.
Encounter Advice
  • avoidance: Maintain distance and steady way: do not stop or loaf in waters where oil slicks appear; keep lookouts at all hours and avoid narrow coastal channels at night. Minimize exposed timber and gear — secure lines and cover decks to prevent being glazed by the creature's secretions.
  • defense: Prioritize mobility and teamwork: use long poles, grapnels, or harpoons to discourage approach from a safe distance and to try to maneuver the creature off the hull. Employ coordinated sail and engine maneuvers to slip free if it crosses the deck. Do not bring open flames near oil-slick areas; if using fire as a deterrent, do so with extreme caution and only at a safe distance. Keep pumps and fresh water ready to wash decks and clear gear.
  • offering: Barrels or floats scented with fish oil or bait, deployed at a distance, are traditionally said to distract or draw the Ikuchi away from craft — a pragmatic decoy rather than an act of worship.

Abilities

  • Endless Oil Drip
A supernatural, tar-like oil continually exudes from its hide and can coat a ship's decks and rigging for hours or days, fouling equipment and extinguishing lamps.
  • Deck Smother
Its oil makes surfaces treacherously slick and corrosive, causing crew to slip, gear to fail, and cargo to be lost overboard.
  • Length Cloak
Its immense, eel-like body can drape across hulls and masts to immobilize vessels or bridge between ships at night.

Weaknesses

  • Flammable Exudate
The very oil it produces is combustible and can be ignited to drive it off or cause severe injury.
  • Daybreak Lull
The Ikuchi's activity diminishes at dawn and it typically withdraws or becomes less active in direct sunlight.
