Lore

Izanami is a Deity of birth and the shadowed realm of the dead. She registers less as a figure and more as a shift in the environment: smell, sound and temperature realigning to acknowledge her passage. Smell: a cool, mineral tang of ash and wet stone, like rain on charred earth. Sound: a single, distant funeral bell and hushed, rustling whispers as if paper and leaves were speaking. Temperature: a persistent, bone-deep chill—not the bite of winter but the hollow cool of caves and long-cooled embers. Field note: plants near her presence close their flowers; lamps gutter without draft; even confident animals grow quiet, as if listening for something beyond sight.

Field Notes

Observations
  • A sudden scent of ash and wet stone with a lone, muted bell and the abrupt dimming of nearby flames.
Encounter Advice
  • taboo: Do not compel her to reveal her true face or drag her from the place she has claimed. In the realm of the dead, avoid looking insistently or demanding explanations; forcing revelation invites sorrow and irrevocable change.
  • reverence: Approach with solemnity: offer simple rice, salt, or sake, perform purification rites, and observe silence or mourning rituals. Respect the boundary between life and death; acknowledgement of both creation and passing honors her.
  • offering: Small bowls of rice or water, a pinch of salt, folded paper talismans, and quiet words of remembrance.

Abilities

  • Thousand-Deaths Edict
By decree she condemns the living to a steady harvest of death—vowing to take one thousand lives each day as the balance of Yomi's toll.
  • Feast of Yomi
Any living who consumes food of Yomi become bound to Izanami and cannot return to the living world without forfeiting their former humanity.
  • Summon Yomotsu-Shikome
She dispatches the wailing hags and corrupted attendants of the underworld to hunt, harry, and drag souls back into Yomi.
  • Corpse-Bloom Rot
Her presence spreads immediate decay and spiritual contamination, wilting life and corrupting fertility in its wake.

Weaknesses

  • Bound by Yomi Food
Having eaten the food of the underworld, Izanami is intrinsically tied to Yomi and cannot permanently leave it once she accepts its feast.
  • Sealed Gate Vulnerability
Physical seals and barriers placed upon the entrance to Yomi (large stones, sacred seals) can trap or bar her influence from the living realm.
  • Purification (Misogi)
Ritual purification and bright sacred rites repel her attendants and cleanse places tainted by her touch.
