Lore
Karkadann is a towering, horned desert beast—more muscle than myth—recorded in Persian and South Asian lore as a dangerous solitary grazer. Smell: a dry, metallic tang like iron filings mixed with sun-baked dust and old animal musk. Sound: a low grinding exhale, the thunder of heavy hooves, and at times a high, reed-like wail that carries across scrub. Temperature: radiates dry heat; the air around it feels warmer, the earth beneath its feet cracked and sun-scorched. A field naturalist notes its hide is coarse and pitted, its single horn thick and ridged, and it moves with the deliberate force of a boulder on legs.

Field Notes
Observations
- Solitary, deep hoofprints often paired with a central gouge or scraped vegetation where the horn has struck; a circle of crushed, scorched plants and a lingering metallic scent.
Encounter Advice
- avoidance: Never approach alone or at dusk. Give the animal a wide berth—do not block escape routes or water sources. Keep elevation and obstacles (rocks, wagons, dense thorn) between you and its likely line of charge. Avoid sudden movements that might be read as threat.
- defense: Prioritize distance and deterrence: loud continuous noise, bright fires at a safe remove, and barriers that force it to slow or turn. If forced to defend, present a united front; long pikes or mounted platforms to keep its horn at bay are preferable to close combat. Do not attempt to corner it—fight only to create an opening to retreat.
Abilities
- Antidote HornIts single spiraled horn purifies poisoned water and neutralizes venoms on contact, able to cleanse wounds or render a poisoned weapon harmless in moments.
- Reed-Quake ChargeA full-gore charge channels its mass into a shockwave that flattens grass, snaps spears, and can unseat mounted foes.
- Marshcloak AmbushIt can sink into reedbeds and knee-deep mud to conceal itself, erupting unexpectedly to gore prey or trespassers.
Weaknesses
- Horn ShatterIf the horn is broken or removed, the horn's purifying magic fails and the beast becomes blood-maddened and mortal ailments that it could repel take hold.
- Quicksilt VulnerabilityIts great bulk can be trapped by deep marsh quicksilt—luring it into boggy ground severely hinders movement and escape.
