Keelut

Lore

Keelut is a Spirit/Cryptid noted in Arctic oral tradition — a lanky, doglike apparition that skirts the edges of pack-ice and tundra. Smell: a cold metallic tang mixed with brine and old kelp, as if the air itself has been scorched by ship iron. Sound: a low, reed-thin howl that slides across snow and an occasional rasping scrape, like claws on thin ice. Temperature: a sudden, nail-biting chill that crystallizes breath and throws frost in a living halo. Field notes record it as a shadowy silhouette with frosted, patchy fur and pale, lantern-like eyes; it moves with the slow relentlessness of a tide, leaving rime and crushed lichen where none should be disturbed.

Field Notes

Observations
  • A tell-tale sign is a narrow trail of rime-crusted kelp and flattened lichen with no ordinary paw prints — accompanied by a distant, single low howl repeated three times.
Encounter Advice
  • avoidance: Travel in groups after dusk, keep a steady fire or lamp between party and open ice, and avoid lingering at shoals or lone hummocks. Do not leave blood or uncovered raw meat around camp; minimize sudden whistles or inviting calls. If you must cross suspected ground, mark a clear, visible route and move briskly.
  • defense: Light, smoke and sustained noise are primary deterrents: maintain flame, burn charred driftwood to create thick smoke, and keep a noisy watch. Retreat to a sealed shelter if possible and keep the fire between you and the creature. Traditional protective items (worn amulets, iron implements carried openly) are said to bolster resolve and may distract it long enough to withdraw. Use offerings to distract rather than to provoke confrontation.
  • offering: A small, fresh strip of seal blubber or salted fish left at the ice edge is traditionally used to distract or placate a Keelut long enough to pass; offerings should be placed quietly and retrieved only when safe.

Abilities

  • Heat-Siphon Maw
Clamps spectral jaws onto a victim and drains body heat, leaving them numb and gradually frozen in place.
  • Glacial Howl
Emits a high, crystalline howl that condenses breath into glittering shards, disorienting trackers and scattering sled teams.
  • Shifting Tracks
Leaves phantom pawprints that rearrange paths on the ice, misleading hunters toward thin or treacherous ice.

Weaknesses

  • Qulliq Flame
The warm light and smoke of a seal-oil lamp (qulliq) repels it and can restore stolen warmth when held to a victim.
  • Daylight Dispersion
Direct sunlight dissolves its spectral form into harmless drifting snow and slush.
