Lore
Kuntilanak is a hostile female spirit often sighted at dusk and through the deep night. In field terms she presents as an incorporeal presence: temperature drops are immediate and localised, breath fogs in otherwise warm air. Smell: a deceptive, heavy sweetness of frangipani/ketapang flowers that can dominate the air for a few heartbeats. Sound: the wail or whimper of an infant followed by a long, high-pitched keening and the whisper of long black hair brushing fabric or leaves. Temperature: an abrupt, bone-deep chill that lingers where she has passed. Observers consistently report a feeling of being watched and a tightening of the chest rather than direct pain—signs of an entity that prefers stealth and lure over open confrontation.

Field Notes
Observations
- A sudden, sweet floral scent (plumeria/ketapang) paired with the sound of a baby crying in an otherwise empty place.
Encounter Advice
- avoidance: Do not follow or approach the source of an unexpected infant cry at night. Avoid solitary paths lined with old trees or banana groves at dusk. Keep infants and vulnerable people indoors after dark; secure doors and windows and avoid leaving clothing or child-sized items outside.
- defense: Prioritise retreat and congregation: move to well-lit, occupied spaces and call for help rather than confronting alone. Traditional deterrents include strong light or fire (lamps, torches), salt lines at thresholds, and visible iron objects or protective amulets; modern best practice is to use illumination, noise, and community presence. If the disturbance persists, seek a local ritual specialist or elder familiar with proper rites—do not attempt risky physical confrontations.
- offering: In lore she is sometimes pacified by respectful rites: white flowers placed at thresholds, proper burial and naming of an unlaid spirit, or the return of lost infant garments—actions framed as restorative rather than transactional.
Abilities
- Infant Wail LureMimics a newborn's cry with uncanny realism to lure lone travelers or draw pregnant victims within reach.
- Banana-Tree AmbushManifests amid plantain/banana trees and slides through foliage or along branches to appear directly above or behind prey.
- Uterine SiphonClutches victims—especially pregnant women—to drain blood and reproductive vitality, often causing miscarriage or rapid death.
Weaknesses
- Nail Through the NapeDriving an iron nail through the back of the corpse's neck pins the spirit to the body and breaks its power.
- Proper Placental BurialIf the mother and placenta were correctly buried and traditional rites performed, she will not rise as a Kuntilanak.
- Sunlight ExposureDirect sunlight disperses her form and forces the spirit back toward the grave.
