Lore

Langsuyar is a vampiric spirit often seen as the gaunt silhouette of a woman with long, unbound hair that ripples like waterweed. Field notes describe her presence as an absence made visible: the air grows thin and damp, shadows lengthen oddly, and the landscape takes on the hush of a room emptied too soon. Smell: a sour-sweet tang of faded frangipani and a metallic undertone, as if old coins and stale iron have been left to the night. Sound: a keening, wavering cry that can mimic a mother’s lament or slip into a high, piercing laugh; sometimes a soft rustle like cloth dragged over floorboards. Temperature: the space around her is bone-deep cold, a damp chill that clings to skin and slows breath. Observations most frequent near isolated dwellings, riverbanks, and sites of untimely childbirth.

Field Notes

Observations
  • A sudden, localized drop in temperature paired with a motherlike wail and the scent of faded flowers without any visible source.
Encounter Advice
  • avoidance: Do not answer solitary cries at night; keep infants and vulnerable people indoors and near a steady light or fire; avoid traveling alone close to dusk in places tied to childbirth or abandoned homesteads.
  • defense: Maintain continuous flame or strong light near sleeping areas, sprinkle salt at thresholds, place iron implements visibly at entrances, and consult a trusted local ritual specialist (dukun or imam) for protections and rites. If disturbed, withdraw to a well-lit, populated area and do not engage with the voice.
  • offering: Small bowls of rice and burning incense placed at a threshold or shrine are traditionally given to placate night spirits; a calm, ritualized approach by a knowledgeable elder is preferred over direct confrontation.

Abilities

  • Neonatal Suckle
Secretly imitates a wet nurse to suck the life and warmth from newborns, leaving infants to waste and wither.
  • Beguiling Shroud
Shifts between a beautiful woman and a long-winged bird to charm caretakers and close distance without raising alarm.
  • Banana-Tree Beacon
Haunts banana trees and emits a mournful, greenish light that lures villagers and clouds their resolve.

Weaknesses

  • Severed Burial
Folklore prescribes separating the corpse's head from the body or burying the body face-down to prevent its rise as a Langsuyar.
  • Salt and Iron Perimeter
Encircling the grave with salt and driving iron stakes through the coffin or grave is said to bind the spirit and stop its return.
