Mae Nak

Lore

Mae Nak is a Spirit traditionally recorded as a hostile apparition—appearing as a woman in plain white cloth with long black hair and a distinctly rounded silhouette. Field notes: Smell: thick jasmine and incense touched by a faint metallic tang, as if old iron lies beneath the sweetness. Sound: distant lullaby-like humming, occasional child's cry that seems to come from within walls, and a soft rustle like cloth dragged across a wooden floor. Temperature: an unnatural, bone-deep chill that ignores ambient warmth and gathers in doorways and under eaves. Observe from the threshold; her presence often warps ordinary household noises into mournful echoes.
Origin: Thai • Phra Khanong (Bangkok)

Field Notes

Observations
  • A sudden, localized chill accompanied by a lullaby or child's cry and the sighting of a pale woman at a window or doorway.
Encounter Advice
  • avoidance: Do not enter or remain alone in the house after dusk if signs appear. Avoid calling out to an unseen voice, do not touch personal items that seem to move, and retreat to a communal, well-lit area until aid arrives.
  • defense: Seek a respected monk or ordained practitioner to perform consecration and chanting; place a consecrated Buddha image or amulet in the home and keep the household rituals public and communal. If immediate removal is required, move belongings out in daylight and do not attempt solitary exorcisms. Maintain a watch and welcome community witnesses—her power wanes when the living refuse secrecy.
  • offering: Small garlands of fresh jasmine, incense and simple food left at the threshold at dawn can calm local activity temporarily, but offerings are not a substitute for proper consecration and community rites.

Abilities

  • Phra Khanong Reach (Wall‑Piercing Embrace)
Mae Nak supernaturally extends her arms through walls, doors or coffins to seize and strangle a target from an impossible angle.
  • Beloved's Guise
She assumes the face and voice of a loved one to lull victims into trust and draw them within reach.
  • Baby's Lullaby (Lure of the Cradle)
Her phantom infant's cries attract the compassionate or curious, then she manipulates grief to bind or terrify them.

Weaknesses

  • Ordained Pali Chanting
Sustained recitation of Pali sutras by an ordained monk disrupts her grip and can force her to reveal or relinquish victims.
  • Consecrated Reburial / Shrine Binding
Reinterring her remains in consecrated soil or establishing a properly blessed shrine pins her to a locus and weakens roaming power.
  • Sacred Amulet (Phra Khruang)
Wearing a consecrated Buddhist amulet repels her approaches and breaks illusions directed at the bearer.
