Lore

Manannán mac Lir is a Sea Deity observed at the boundary where surf meets sky. Field notes record him as a presence of salt and shadow: the air thick with brine and crushed kelp, a cold, clean bite against the skin; sounds like a low, bell‑like chime undercut by gull calls and the whisper of running water; temperature markedly cool—a bank of mist that chills rather than warms. He appears as a king of the tides in lore: a cloak of shimmering fog, a horse that drinks the waves, and the uncanny feeling of standing on damp stone that remembers other worlds.

Field Notes

Observations
  • A sudden, localized sea‑mist and the faint, bell-like chime carried on the wind above the surf.
Encounter Advice
  • taboo: Never strip offerings from the strand or publicly mock the sea. Do not claim his steeds or treasures found at low tide; taking them without permission invites long misfortune.
  • reverence: At dusk, leave a small gift at the tidal edge—coin, length of cloth, a cup of fresh milk or water—and speak a respectful name: 'Manannán mac Lir.' A quiet, formal address and steady gaze toward the horizon are the old ways of asking safe passage or favour.
  • offering: Coin, a strip of cloth, a shell, or a small cup of fresh milk/water placed on a rock at the tide line.

Abilities

  • Veil of Manannán (Cloak of Mists)
Unfurls an enchanted cloak of sentient mist that can hide islands, ships, and the Otherworld from mortal sight and render wearers invisible to most eyes.
  • Scuabtuinne — Wave‑Sweeper
Commands his enchanted skiff 'Scuabtuinne' that leaves no wake, traverses surf and foam between worlds, calms or upheaves sea-lanes, and can strand or spare vessels at his whim.
  • Enbarr, Wave‑Stepping Steed
Summons Enbarr, a horse that runs on water and wind, carrying rider and master across sea and land faster than pursuit and into Otherworldly places.
  • Ferry of the Otherworld
Opens, guards, or seals passages to Tír na nÓg and other Otherworld realms, ferrying souls or banishing intruders with legalistic force and ritual power.

Weaknesses

  • Cloak Stripped
If his mist-cloak or his Scuabtuinne is seized or destroyed, his principal concealments and free passage are drastically weakened.
  • Bound by Geasa (Oaths)
Manannán is subject to geasa and bargains—precise wording, fulfilled terms, or tricked vows can bind or limit his actions.
  • Cold Iron
Like many Otherworld powers, cold iron wounds his servants and can disrupt some of his enchantments when used rightly.
