Lore

Mannegishi is a Trickster fae recorded in Cree oral tradition — small, wiry humanoids often encountered along rocky shorelines and shallow shoals. In field notes they appear quick and deliberate, with smooth, almost stone-like skin and long, dexterous fingers that move like ripples across water. Smell: a cool, mineral scent of wet stone and river-moss. Sound: a dry, high chitter like pebbles clicking together, sometimes punctuated by breathy mimicry of human voices. Temperature: the air near them takes on a faint, damp coolness, as if fog has pooled at ankle level.
Origin: Cree • Subarctic Canada / Great Lakes

Field Notes

Observations
  • Carefully arranged small piles of pebbles or a sudden disappearance of small personal items accompanied by distant chittering at dusk.
Encounter Advice
  • mischief: They tangle nets, loosen canoe lashings, swap bait or tools for shiny pebbles, mimic familiar voices to confuse fishermen, and create puzzling rock patterns. Their pranks are clever and rule-driven rather than destructive.
  • interaction: Observe from a respectful distance and remain calm. Leave a small polished stone or simple trinket on a flat rock as a token, speak plainly and avoid threats or boastful claims. They respect clear bargains and cleverness; loud disturbance invites more mischief.
  • offering: A polished stone, a small bead, or a brief song left where they frequent

Abilities

  • River-Stone Guise
Takes on the exact appearance and thermal feel of a river stone so travelers and fishers pass without noticing or step wrongly, causing misdirection or accidental loss.
  • Silt-Voice Mimicry
Mimics a familiar voice or the sound of fish in shallow water to lure a person or lure prey into traps and snags.
  • Bait-Slip
Silently plucks bait, tackle or small tools from lines and hands, leaving only a small pebble in their place to mask the theft.

Weaknesses

  • Sacred Tobacco Offering
Calms and placates them quickly; an offered plug of tobacco can halt aggression and negotiate safe passage.
  • Fire/Heat
Prolonged flame and heat crack their stone-like skin and force them to flee into deeper water or hiding, breaking illusions.
  • Salt Line
A line of coarse salt across a path or boat edge disrupts their river-bound glamours and repels them temporarily.
