Mare

NightmareWardingGermanicNocturnalSpirit

Lore

Mare is a hostile nocturnal spirit, often described in field notes as a shadow that settles on the chest of sleepers. It presents like an animal-shaped pressure: the weight of a small horse or a heavy darkness pressing the breath from the victim. Smell: a damp, earthen tang—wet hay and the faint horsey musk of a stable after rain. Sound: distant, rhythmical scraping of hooves at the foot of the bed, undercut by a thin, sibilant whisper that mimics the sleeper's own voice. Temperature: a sudden, bone-deep chill localized where the presence rests; surrounding air feels heavier and clammy.

Field Notes

Observations
  • Unexplained nocturnal chest pressure accompanied by the smell of wet hay or the quiet scrape of hooves.
Encounter Advice
  • avoidance: Keep sleeping area dry and aired; place iron (horseshoe, nail) near or above the bed, sprinkle a line of salt at the threshold, and avoid sleeping with your head below ground level or in untreated stables.
  • defense: Gently rouse the sleeper (daylight weakens the mare), pass an iron object over the affected area, remove bedding to break contact, and cleanse the room with salt or smoke (juniper/incense) until the chill lifts.
  • offering: A small bowl of oats or clean water left outside the sleeping door is said to placate lesser mara; more aggressive presences respond only to wards and iron.

Abilities

  • Night-Press (Chest-Weight)
Sits upon a sleeper's chest to immobilize them and induce crushing, waking nightmares and the sensation of breathlessness.
  • Dream-Weave
Intrudes into dreams to stitch vivid, sustained nightmares that sap willpower and cause long-lasting sleeplessness.
  • Steed-Spook
Enchants or maddens horses at night, causing them to bolt, foam, or refuse riders—origin of the creature's equine name-link.

Weaknesses

  • Wrought Iron
Direct contact with iron repels or harms the mare and breaks its hold on sleepers.
  • Horseshoe across the Bed
Placing a horseshoe or broom across the sleeper's bed prevents the mare from settling on the chest.
  • Dawn / Bright Light
Daylight and bright firelight dissipate the mare's presence and force it to retreat.
