Lore

Melusine is a Fae — a river-born woman often described with a serpentine or fish-like lower body. She carries the clean chill of moving water: the smell of damp river-moss, crushed rosemary, and wet stone; the sound of her presence is a chiming, bell-like laugh undercut by the soft susurration of water over rock and the distant creak of a wheel. Her touch and the air around her are cool and slightly electric, leaving surfaces beaded with fine river-sheen. Field notes: she favors ruins, mill-ponds, and hidden castle streams where domestic life meets wild water.

Field Notes

Observations
  • Pale, glinting scales on mossy stones or the sudden, unnatural stillness of birds above a stretch of water; sometimes a curtain of drying linen or a window steamed only on one side.
Encounter Advice
  • mischief: Melusine tests the promises of mortals. She will bind a household to prosperity under strict, often private, conditions (notably a demand for privacy at a recurring hour). Break the rule and she withdraws blessings, leaving cold misfortune or a lingering grievance on the lineage. Her mischief is procedural rather than wantonly cruel: rearranged personal items, silent unmaking of locks, polished but misplaced small objects, or sudden stoppages of mills.
  • interaction: Never violate her private hour or spy upon her. Approach plainly, state your intent, and keep bargains short and specific. Leave before dawn; do not attempt to force her presence. Simple gifts—fresh ribbon, a polished comb, a small loaf or sprig of rosemary—acknowledge respect and may secure a single favor. If a promise is made, honor it without invention or delay.
  • offering: Small, honest tokens: a ribbon, comb, fresh bread, or rosemary; anything neat, unassuming, and sincere.

Abilities

  • Half-Serpent Revelation
On her private bathing day she sheds a human guise to reveal a serpentine or piscine lower body, an act that breaks mundane contracts and severs trust with anyone who witnesses it.
  • Millward Prosperity
She enfolds a household or mill in durable blessings of fertility and profitable waters so long as privacy and vow are respected.
  • Lineage Severance
When betrayed she leaves a ruinous curse on descendants and strips ancestral luck, undoing fortunes tied to her protection.

Weaknesses

  • Sabbath Exposure
If a spouse or protector deliberately sees her on the appointed bathing day she is compelled to abandon the pact and may curse the household.
  • Bound to Her Spring
Her influence and longevity are tethered to a specific river, spring, or mill—removal, damming or desiccation weakens and displaces her.
