Unpack the chilling Taoist demonology behind Koh the Face Stealer and Wan Shi Tong's ancient sunken desert library.
Lore
Qilin is a divine chimeric guardian — part deer, part ox, part dragon in scale and grace — that announces great change rather than seeks conflict. In the field it is unmistakable: scent of warm cassia and damp sandalwood hangs in the air like incense left burning; the sound is a soft, bell-like clatter of scaled hooves and a low wind through bamboo; temperature around the creature runs gently warm, as if sunlight pooled at its feet. A careful naturalist notes the creature's slow, deliberate movements, the faint gold dust that clings to its hooves, and the hush it brings to birds and insects.

Field Notes
Observations
- Faintly scented cassia on the breeze, bell-like hoof taps, and hoofprints edged in a subtle golden dust.
Encounter Advice
- taboo: Never attempt to harm, trap, or ride a Qilin; do not block its path or force its hand. Lying, deceit, or wanton violence in its presence is an affront and will break the omen it carries.
- reverence: Show silence and stillness: bow or kneel, present simple offerings (incense, jade, plain rice) without flourish, and speak truthfully if addressed. Treat its appearance as a sign to be honored, not exploited.
- offering: Sandalwood or cassia incense, a small piece of polished jade, or a bowl of plain white rice placed respectfully at a distance.
Abilities
- Judgment of PuritySenses the moral truth of beings and brands the wicked with a smouldering sigil that causes nearby plants to wither as a public omen.
- Hooves of Gentle PassageTraverses fields without crushing flora and heals trampled earth where its hooves touch.
- Omen-BlessingIts appearance confers long life, auspicious fortune, and legitimacy on a newborn or ruler it favours.
Weaknesses
- Iron BindingsWrought iron manacles or chains confuse and temporarily restrain a Qilin's spirit, slowing or halting it.
- False SummoningRituals that attempt to mimic virtue (for example, offering blood at a Qilin shrine) invert its blessing and can turn its omen into a curse.
