Lore

Sasabonsam is a Hostile (Monster) of Akan forest lore, described as a tree-dwelling ambush predator spotted deep in old-growth rainforest. Smell: a heavy musk of wet loam, damp leaves and overripe fruit — the scent of a hollow stump after rain. Sound: the dry snap of branches at head height, a hollow creak like wood under strain, and an intermittent keening that hangs oddly between a cough and a call. Temperature: the air beneath its branch feels warm and humid, as though a living weight radiates heat into the understory. Field observations note long, hooked limbs, coarse reddish or dark fur along the shoulders, backward-facing feet, and a habit of perching motionless until prey passes beneath.

Field Notes

Observations
  • Fresh breaks and gouges on low branches at head height, uncommon backward-pointing footprints pressed into soft ground, and an abrupt stillness in understory birds are the clearest signs of presence.
Encounter Advice
  • avoidance: Do not travel alone beneath closed canopy at dusk or dawn. Keep to well-worn trails, stay in groups, and avoid pausing beneath low branches. Maintain light and noise — torches and steady voices reduce the chance of a close encounter.
  • defense: If you suspect a Sasabonsam nearby, move to open ground or a cleared camp, keep fire and bright light between you and the trees, and remain together. Make loud, coordinated noise and use smoke to drive it from cover. If attacked, prioritize freeing yourself and reaching open space; group strength and light are the best deterrents.
  • offering: At trail edges, traditional practice sometimes leaves kola nut or a strip of cloth as a respectful token before entering deep forest; smoke and steady fire are universally regarded as a boundary signal.

Abilities

  • Canopy Drop & Hook-Foot Snare
Perches motionless among branches then drops, impaling or hooking a victim with its hooked feet to suspend and ambush them.
  • Iron-Tooth Life Drain
Clamps with iron-like teeth to tear and draw blood or life-force from prey, weakening victims over minutes.
  • Branch Mimicry
Blends into a tree's limbs and bark so effectively it can appear as a living branch until it chooses to strike.

Weaknesses

  • Felled Perch
If the tree it uses to ambush is cut or uprooted, the Sasabonsam loses its primary ambush advantage and is forced to the ground.
  • Open Fire
Sustained flames burn its wooden perch and irritate or wound its limbs, driving it away from a hunted area.
  • Communal Drumming and Noise
Persistent loud drums or coordinated noise disrupt its hunting stealth and can scatter or confuse it.
