Lore

Tatzelwurm is a cryptid described in Alpine field notes as a low, muscular serpent-bodied creature with a short, almost feline head — more beast than spirit. In person it registers as warm and compact, a concentrated animal heat that fogs breath in cold air; the smell is damp moss and old musk, with a faint tang of iron like disturbed soil. Its call is surprising: a dry, reedy hiss that can turn to a sharp, catlike yowl; nearby vegetation often bears neat, parallel scrapes where it pushed through undergrowth. The overall impression is of a creature built for quick bursts in rocky scree rather than a lingering ambush.

Field Notes

Observations
  • A dry, reedy hiss or short yowl followed by a line of parallel scrape marks through underbrush and small, three-toed prints.
Encounter Advice
  • behavior: Primarily crepuscular and solitary: it hunts small mammals and prefers talus slopes, alpine meadows and stone walls. It moves in short, sudden bursts, squeezing through narrow rock seams and resting in sun-warmed ledges. Generally avoids human settlements but may investigate livestock at the edge of pastures if food is scarce.
  • interaction: Observe from a distance and give it room to leave — approach slowly, keep movement low and voices soft. Do not corner it; sudden movements provoke a defensive strike. If necessary, make a calm, steady retreat uphill and allow it an escape route through rocks or dense cover.
  • offering: Folklore suggests leaving a small bowl of milk or a pinch of salt at the edge of a pasture as a neutral gesture; more practical: avoid direct contact and secure livestock at dusk.

Abilities

  • Valley Wail
Emits a piercing, catlike howl that causes nausea, disorientation and temporary paralysis in humans and panics livestock into deadly stampedes.
  • Stollen-Slip
Compresses and flattens its elongated body to squeeze through narrow rock fissures and alpine tunnels for stealthy ambushes and sudden disappearances.
  • Corrosive Saliva
Spits a burning, acidic saliva that rapidly frays leather and hemp and inflicts searing wounds on flesh.

Weaknesses

  • Wrought-iron blade
Sustained strikes from forged iron (knives, nails, spearheads) cause lingering physical and mythic wounds that dull its Valley Wail.
  • Open flame
Prolonged exposure to open flame forces it from rock crevices and disrupts its ability to compress, making it vulnerable to hunters.
  • Alpine bells (loud metallic clanging)
Sharp metallic ringing (cowbells or summit bells) overloads and temporarily shatters its Valley Wail, giving targets time to flee.
