Vodnik

Lore

Vodnik is a Fae observed along slow river bends, marshy ponds, and forgotten mill races. It presents as a sodden, human-shaped presence: skin the color of algae and river silt, hair threaded with reeds and slimy leaves, clothing hanging heavy with water. Smell: a cold, metallic tang of old coins and wet earth underlaid with the reedy rot of stagnant water. Sound: a private, gurgling chuckle, the soft slap of a board against water, and sometimes the faint clink like porcelain from far below the surface. Temperature: an unnatural chill that seems to draw warmth from the air — the bank feels colder within its range, as if a current runs under your boots. Field notes record it as patient and territorial, a creature of margins and fog that watches from the shallows rather than pursuing on land.

Field Notes

Observations
  • A ring of steady bubbles rising in otherwise still water at the bend — often accompanied by the quiet clink of something metallic from beneath.
Encounter Advice
  • avoidance: Do not enter water near its territory, especially at dusk or in fog. Travel the banks in daylight, in groups, and keep to high ground. Do not reach for floating objects or attempt to retrieve items that drift near its lair.
  • defense: If confronted, refuse the water: keep on dry land, put a sturdy board or pole between you and the surface, and retreat to higher ground. Carry iron or salt to scatter toward the water and a bright light or bell to break its focus; noise and fire will often drive it back to the depths. Never dive after it — the current is its domain.
  • offering: Optional: leaving an empty clay cup or a small coin on the bank, or returning a lost trinket recovered from shallow water, can sometimes placate a Vodnik long enough to pass.

Abilities

  • Jarred Souls
Seals the soul of a drowned victim into clay jugs, bottles, or mugs kept in his underwater hoard to be counted and traded.
  • Reed-Whistle Lure
Plays or mimics familiar voices and reed-like calls to draw fishermen and bathers into dangerous shallows and undercurrents.
  • Anchoring Grip
Clings to hulls or legs with algae-wrapped hands and twists currents to capsize boats or hold victims beneath the surface.

Weaknesses

  • Stolen Soul Vessel
If his collected jars or soul-vessels are taken from the riverbed, he is enraged and often loses the ability to directly reclaim those souls.
  • Blessed Iron & Bells
Hammered iron driven into a bank or the ringing of church bells disorients and repels him.
  • Desiccation
When his pool is drained, frozen solid, or separated from running water he is confined and his water-formed powers weaken markedly.
