Wakwak

PhilippineVampiricNightAvianFolklore

Lore

Wakwak is a hostile cryptid of Philippine night lore, described as an avian-like predator that haunts village edges and lonely roads after dusk. Smell: a metallic, wet-iron tang mixed with the sourness of damp leaves and old smoke. Sound: a hollow, breathy clicking or repeated "wakwak" call, accompanied by the muffled thud and rasp of large wings. Temperature: the air near its passage takes on an immediate chill, the kind that settles in bones as if dusk itself has deepened. A field naturalist notes feather fragments at dawn, lantern reflections on glassy eyes, and the way domestic animals fall silent long before a sighting.

Field Notes

Observations
  • A remote, repetitive "wakwak" call from treetops at night paired with a sudden, localized drop in temperature and scattered small feathers by morning.
Encounter Advice
  • avoidance: Do not travel alone after sunset; stick to well-lit, populated routes. Keep doors and windows fastened, and animals sheltered. Ignore distant calls—responding can draw it nearer. Remove obvious attractants (uncovered food, fresh carcasses).
  • defense: If encountered, prioritize light and noise: raise lamps, torches or any bright light and make continuous loud sound to disorient flight. Create smoke or throw salt/ashes into the air to break its approach. If it attempts to land, aim to disrupt its wings and force it to retreat—then withdraw to secure shelter. Never pursue it into dark, unfamiliar terrain.
  • offering: Optional traditional appeasements include bowls of salt or rice and smoke (incense or burning coconut husk) left by thresholds; more pragmatic measures—lanterns, bells, and communal watch—are often recommended.

Abilities

  • Visceral Snatch
Extends barbed talons to extract fetuses or internal organs from sleeping victims without waking them.
  • Wak-call Lure
Emits the characteristic 'wak-wak' cry that masks its approach and lures vulnerable people toward exposed roofs and windows.
  • Shadow-Slip
Glides through darkness and tight eaves, becoming near-imperceptible until it strikes.

Weaknesses

  • Sunlight
Daylight strips its flight and supernatural edge, forcing it into a fragile human form or dormancy.
  • Salt Line
A continuous ring or line of salt blocks its entry and compels retreat.
  • Rosary / Blessed Palm
Christian talismans and blessed palm icons cause intense pain and drive it away.
