Lore
Yara-ma-yha-who is a small, squat, frog-like monster that haunts the shady canopy of old fig trees. Field notes: a crimson, rubbery hide, oversized head and a wide, sucking mouth give it an amphibious silhouette—more ambusher than stalker. Smell: the air around its lair carries a sour, fermented-fig tang mixed with damp leaf mold. Sound: movement is betrayed by soft, wet thumps in the branches and an intermittent, childlike chirp that lures the unwary. Temperature: always cool and humid beneath the trees it favors, as if the creature brings a pocket of twilight with it. Observed behavior is rapid drop-and-grasp ambushes from low limbs; it relies on surprise rather than speed.

Field Notes
Observations
- Tell-tale sign: neat semicircular marks or small, suction-like impressions on clothing and skin, plus overturned fig leaves and an odd clustering of dropped fruit beneath branches.
Encounter Advice
- avoidance: Avoid solitary travel near large fig trees at dawn, dusk and during moonless nights. Stay on open paths, keep groups together, make deliberate noise when passing dense canopy, and do not rest or sleep beneath low limbs.
- defense: If approached, create distance and light—move into open sunlight if possible and use torches or bright lamps to disorient it. Use long tools or branches to keep it from reaching you; aim to pry it from the branch rather than grapple close. If forced into contact, prioritize escape and reaching others rather than prolonged struggle. Seek out local elders or guides for ritual remedies and care rather than attempting elaborate measures alone.
- offering: Small offerings of ripe figs or fruit placed at the tree's base are said in some tellings to distract or placate the creature, buying time to pass safely.
Abilities
- Fig-Tree Ambush & Sanguine SuckleDrops from fig branches onto a resting victim and drains blood with a toothless, barrel-like sucker mouth until the victim is weakened.
- Regurgitative DiminutionSwallows whole and later regurgitates survivors smaller and more like the Yara-ma-yha-who, slowly converting victims through repeated feedings.
Weaknesses
- Toothless FeedingIts lack of teeth makes its hold and feeding reliant on suction and vulnerable to being pried off or choked, interrupting its attack.
- Fig-Tree DependencyHunts by ambush from fig trees and cannot stage effective attacks far from its arboreal lairs.
- Daylight AversionIs primarily active at dusk and night and will retreat when exposed to strong daylight.
