Zaramama

MarshProtectorNocturnal

Lore

Zaramama is a Cryptid (Marsh Beast) found in the reed-ringed shallows and mist corridors of the Zara Basin. Smell: the air around it carries a wet sweetness of river moss and crushed algae with a faint metallic tang of iron-rich mud. Sound: its approach is signaled by a low, rolling chuff—like distant thunder slowed and tuned to the pitch of reed-sheaths rubbing—punctuated by the soft clink of scale against stone. Temperature: the beast radiates humid warmth; breath steams in cool mornings and its flank feels muscled and dense beneath the fur. Field notes read like this: movement that presses reeds into concentric arcs, a scattered trail of dark, glassy pebbles, and an unsettling stillness left in its wake.
Origin: Andean (Quechua/Aymara) • Altiplano highlands (Peru/Bolivia)
Classification: Cryptid (Marsh Beast)

Field Notes

Observations
  • Concentric arcs of flattened reeds leading to the water and crescent-shaped impressions in the mud speckled with small glossy scales.
Encounter Advice
  • behavior: Primarily crepuscular and nocturnal, Zaramama forages along banks for fish, shell, and the bright reflections of human items. It is a careful collector of shiny objects and will line a brood-den with polished pebbles. Generally solitary and deliberate, it inspects intrusions with curiosity rather than aggression; when threatened it prefers bluff—low charges, vocal displays, and a hot, misted exhale—retreating if met with steady refusal to escalate.
  • interaction: Approach indirectly and calmly: leave an offering at water's edge and withdraw to a concealed vantage. Avoid sudden movements or loud noises; observe its patterns across several nights. If you must move it from a nest-site, do so slowly and openly to allow the animal space to depart—direct confrontation tends to provoke a defensive display.
  • offering: A polished river pebble, a length of braided reed, or a carefully cleaned small fish left at the water's edge.

Abilities

  • Thorn-Braid Warding
Conjures living braids of thorny cactus that instantaneously coil into barricades, entangle limbs and leech strength from those who try to cut through them.
  • Altiplano Mirror
Creates a warped reflection of a traveler's fate in a patch of highland fog, exchanging wounds, luck or harvest yield between two mirrored parties.
  • Woolen Herd Phantoms
Summons spectral llamas woven from breeze and fleece that either shepherd the lost to safety or trample intruders under silent hooves.

Weaknesses

  • Salted Silver Thread
A single strand of silver threaded with coarse salt, laid across a braid, dissolves her thorn-weave and severs her hold on summoned barriers.
  • Returned Offspring
If a stolen newborn lamb or uprooted young cactus taken from her terraces is returned and ritually bound, her wrath abates and bargains can be struck.
  • Sunless Noon
Prolonged absence of direct sun on her terraces (covered fields or persistent black frost) weakens her conjurations and slows her recovery.
