Fomorians Lore & Origins
Fomorians are a hostile, monstrous tide-born folk frequently reported along storm-wracked coasts and bog-land margins. Field-naturalist notes record them as large, misshapen silhouettes against surf and cliff—barnacle-pocked skin, limbs likened to driftwood, and faces half-obscured by sea-spray and shadow. Smell: a sharp brine of kelp and iron, with undernotes of peat smoke and cold metal. Sound: low, grinding creaks like keel-stressed ships and a hollow, distant groan that carries across tide flats; seabirds fall eerily silent in their wake. Temperature: the air near them will feel brutally cold and damp, a chill that bites through wool and seems to numb the extremities. Encounters are rare but leave a clear imprint on the landscape and memory—flattened reed-beds, salt-blackened stones, and an oppressive, watchful quiet.

Fomorians Encounter Protocols & Field Notes
Observations
- A tell-tale sign is a sudden band of dead or strangely flattened seaweed and a circle of bleached shells on the shore where the tide seems unnaturally still.
Encounter Advice
- avoidance: Avoid low tidal channels and isolated coves at dusk and during storms; do not answer or mimic any whale, horn, or human call near such places. Travel with iron (nails, horseshoes) visibly carried; keep to ridgelines and never camp with your back to the sea when the wind turns inland.
- defense: If confronted, retreat to higher, open ground and present iron between you and the Fomorian. Use fire and smoke to disrupt their approach; short, decisive strikes with iron blades or blackthorn staves can drive them back. Coordinate in groups—single travelers are at greatest risk.
- offering: Small offerings left at the landward edge of the tide—salted fish, a ring of iron filings, or smoke from peat and blackthorn—may distract a roaming Fomorian long enough to pass; offerings are not a guarantee and should only be used as a last resort for escape.
Fomorians Abilities & Powers
- Baleful Evil EyeA single opened eye releases a lethal, baleful gaze that kills living beings and can scorch or blight the land in an instant.
- Landblight (Murrain of the Fomorians)They lay a curse upon fields and herds that causes sudden sterility, rot, and long-lived famine across harvests.
- Sea‑Storm CommandFomorians summon raging tempests and tidal assaults, directing winds and waves to drown ships and scour coasts.
- Colossal GraspTheir monstrous, distorted limbs can crush people, collapse walls, and wrench ships from their moorings with brute force.
Weaknesses & How to Defeat the Fomorians
- Sealed or Destroyed EyeCovering, sealing, or removing the evil eye nullifies its lethal gaze and can break certain Fomorian curses.
- Projectile to the Eye (Slingstone)Myth records that a thrown stone to the eye—most famously Lugh's slingstone—can fell even a great Fomorian lord.
- Tuatha‑forged Arms and CharmsWeapons and talismans of the Tuatha Dé Danann are especially effective at repelling or wounding Fomorians.
