Garmr Lore & Origins
Garmr is a legendary guardian hound—massive, sinewed and coiled like a hunting knot—spoken of in field notes as if seen at the lip of a cave at sunset. Smell: a metallic tang of iron and peat, with the faint musk of damp fur and old embers. Sound: a low, throat-deep howl that carries like distant thunder and the rasp of heavy chains. Temperature: surprisingly warm at close range, the dog’s breath steaming in cold air and the muscles beneath its hide radiating animal heat. A naturalist’s eye catches many minor details: clipped ears, healed scars around the jaws, and a gait that never rushes yet always readsied.
Origin: Norse • Scandinavia
Classification: Monster (Canine)
Garmr Encounter Protocols & Field Notes
Observations
- A far-reaching, single howl that silences other dogs and a smear of dark stain at the mouth of a cave or barrow.
Encounter Advice
- avoidance: Steer clear of coastal caves, barrows, and lone headlands at dusk or dawn. If you hear the hallmark howl, retreat along high ground and do not approach the cave mouth. Travel in numbers and avoid leaving clear scent trails that might lead a hunter to a lair.
- defense: Do not engage close-up. Place iron or iron-bound barriers between you and its approach, keep a bright fire or lanterns between you and the hound, and use prolonged noise to unsettle it (bells, horns). If forced into confrontation, keep distance, rely on obstacles and elevation, and withdraw when an opening appears.
- offering: Small iron tokens, an offering of raw meat left at a safe distance, or the steady recitation of an oath—rituals recorded in folklore as ways to delay or distract the hound rather than win it to friendship.
Garmr Abilities & Powers
- Ragnarök HowlA single, world-rending howl that weakens divine seals and heralds the breaking of cosmic bonds that usher in Ragnarök.
- ChainrendSnaps sacred fetters and rune-bound restraints by channeling ritualized blood and force through its jaws, allowing escape from supernatural bonds.
- Bloodstain MawWounds from its mauling bleed an unhealing, fetid blood that saps morale and marks survivors as beacons for the restless dead.
Weaknesses & How to Defeat the Garmr
- Bound by ProphecyGarmr's actions and release are governed by prophecy—he cannot permanently break the timeline of Ragnarök and is constrained to act only when foretold.
- Sacred FettersWhile restrained at Gnipahellir by ancestral chains and rune-seals, his mobility and raw power are sharply curtailed until those specific bonds are broken.
