Lore

Fenrir is a Monster in colossal wolf form: heavily muscled, shoulders like toppled boulders, hide that drinks light and a maw that seems designed to silence the world. Smell: a cold iron tang braided with the sour dust of old battlefields and the clean snap of ozone after a storm. Sound: a low, resonant breathing that rolls like distant thunder, punctuated by a single, bone-deep growl that makes nearby birds fall silent. Temperature: a dry, oppressive heat radiates from its flank—not the wet warmth of a living dog but the furnace-thrum of something elemental and relentless. Field notes emphasize measured distance, slow observation, and never turning your back while it is in view.

Field Notes

Observations
  • Long, deep gouge marks across stone or earth large enough for a man to crawl through; air carries rolling, thunder-like breathing.
Encounter Advice
  • avoidance: Maintain altitude and fortified shelter; avoid open plains at dusk and do not provoke or attempt to bind it without mythic means; travel in groups, travel routes should avoid known paw-mark trails and narrow defiles where escape is cut off.
  • defense: Primary strategy is evasion and containment: withdraw to strongholds, fortify doors and chokepoints, and employ coordinated distractions to redirect its attention. Conventional blades and snares are unreliable—seek aid from ritual bindings or allies versed in ancient wards rather than direct confrontation.
  • offering: No simple offering will placate Fenrir; best practice is to avoid meeting it. If binding is necessary, legends name specially forged bonds (e.g., Gleipnir) as the only reliable method.

Abilities

  • Ragnarök Devour
When freed at Ragnarök, Fenrir's maw can swallow Odin and rend divine authority, annihilating gods and unraveling cosmic order.
  • Fated Break
At the prophesied hour Fenrir can shatter or slip any mortal or enchanted restraint not forged with the specific ingredients of Gleipnir.
  • Lupine Colossus
Fenrir can swell to colossal, landscape-rending size, using jaws and limbs to topple mountains and swallow ships or celestial bodies.

Weaknesses

  • Gleipnir Binding
A ribbon forged from impossible things (the sound of a cat's footfall, a woman's beard, etc.) that holds Fenrir immobilised until the prophecy's fulfillment.
  • Prophetic Constraint
Fenrir's fate is woven into prophecy—his timing and final acts are predictable and can be prepared for by seers and gods.
  • Tyr's Bargain
The oath that tricked Fenrir into submission creates a cultural and honour-bound vulnerability exploitable by wagers and ruses at great risk.
