Hel

Hel is a Deity (Underworld) observed where shore meets shadow: fjord mouths, burial mounds and the threshold between hearth and hollow. She is less a living figure than a presiding presence—quiet, patient, and inexorable, an authority over those who pass without heroic blaze. Smell: damp peat, salt, and a faint metallic tang as of old iron. Sound: the distant drip of water and the slow creak of timbers, underlain by a hush of whispered names. Temperature: an unyielding cold that numbs the breath and leaves a sheen of frost on hair and stone.
