Orang Minyak

Orang Minyak is a Hostile (Monster) — a human-shaped predator described in Malay folklore as coated head-to-toe in a gleaming, black grease. In the field it reads as a corporeal animal: lithe, muscular, and unnervingly fluid in movement. Smell: a persistent tang of kerosene and damp seaweed, with undernotes of old rubber. Sound: soft, sliding scuffs, the occasional drip of viscous liquid, and the faint rustle of cloth against slick skin. Temperature: paradoxically warm and clammy to the touch, the oil lending a heat-retaining sheen rather than cold incorporeality. Observers note that light pools on its surface like water and footprints often smear rather than press into the ground.
