Pret Lore & Origins
Pret Encounter Protocols & Field Notes
- An overturned bowl of rice or an unconsumed plate outside a doorway, accompanied by a thin, keening sound at dusk and a sudden ring of cold.
- avoidance: Keep distance and bright light between you and the presence; avoid approaching unlit shrines or shadowed thresholds at dusk. Do not offer food from your hand or invite it into your living space. Close doors and windows, maintain a steady lamp or fire, and do not try to 'feed' it while alone or in the dark.
- defense: Create a barrier of light and clean flame: lamps, incense, or a candle placed between you and the apparition. Sprinkle salt or ash across thresholds and carry a simple iron token or bell to break the silence; sustained protective chanting or recitation of sacred verses by a practiced person disperses the cling. If contact is inevitable, retreat calmly toward daylight or a consecrated area and seek a knowledgeable elder or monk.
- offering: Small, simple offerings left outside — plain bowls of rice, water, or a flickering oil lamp — are said to distract or placate a Pret without inviting it inside.
Pret Abilities & Powers
- Insatiable CravingA metaphysical hunger that siphons warmth and life from nearby living beings and offerings, leaving them cold and hollow.
- Throat-Narrowing CurseIts mouth is a needle-thin aperture that causes solid food to turn to soot or scorching ash on contact, preventing normal feeding.
- Hungry WailA keening cry that attracts vermin, sours food stores, and spreads nightmares and malaise through a household for a night.
Weaknesses & How to Defeat the Pret
- Cooked Rice & Toasted SesameSmall portions of cooked rice or toasted sesame temporarily satiate and calm a Pret, breaking its compulsive hunger and aggression.
- Monastic MantraChanting consecrated sutras or mantras binds or drives away a Pret and can reclaim it into ritual care.
- Ash and Coarse SaltSprinkling ash or coarse salt irritates its narrow throat and disrupts its ability to siphon life from offerings.
