Pukwudgie

Pukwudgie is a small, humanoid Fae recorded in northeastern woodlands lore. In the field it appears as a compact, upright figure—roughly knee to waist height for an adult human—whose skin takes on the grey-brown of river stones and leaf litter. Movement is deliberate and stealthy: it slips between roots and shadows with the patience of a stalking mammal. Smell: the air near one carries the cool, damp scent of crushed leaves and a faint metallic tang, like iron hidden under moss. Sound: listen for a brittle chuckle, a whispering mimicry of human voices, and the dry snap of a twig that comes from different directions at once. Temperature: the immediate air often feels noticeably cooler, a damp chill that makes breath show in the shade. Field notes emphasize watchfulness—Pukwudgies study from cover, test boundaries with pranks, and vanish at the first direct confrontation.
