Wewe Gombel

Wewe Gombel is a Fae of Javanese lore: an incorporeal, nocturnal presence that prefers abandoned courtyards, banana groves and the shadowed eaves of houses. Field notes describe the approach as primarily environmental — a sudden, damp chill that settles on the skin, the lingering scent of wilted jasmine and old smoke, and the unmistakable sound of plaintive, childlike crying that seems to come from hollow trees or rafters rather than from any visible throat. Visual confirmation is rare; observers report only fleeting silhouettes and the rustle of dry leaves as if many small feet have passed through them.
