In the field it appears as a slow, stiff figure stained with soil and the pallor of long confinement; its movements are deliberate rather than animalistic. Smell: the cold tang of turned earth with a faint metallic note like old iron. Sound: soft, uneven scraping of boots on stone, low whispering at the edge of hearing, and occasionally the creak of a shutter or gate answering its approach. Temperature: a localized, persistent chill that bends breath into mist and frosts nearby blades of grass. Recorded observations emphasize its steady, patient approach rather than frantic bursts of speed.

- Fresh disturbance of a gravesite or a set of footprints leading from a grave toward a dwelling with no return trail; accompanied by a sudden, localized drop in temperature and the smell of turned earth.

- avoidance: Do not pursue. Keep to well-lit, open ground and avoid solitary travel near old burial sites at dusk or dawn. Close and secure thresholds (doors, windows) and keep hearth fires or lamps burning — flame and light often deter close approach. Keep animals indoors; dogs and birds will often signal its arrival before you see it.
