Revenant Lore & Origins
Revenant is an Undead presence that returns from burial with single-minded purpose. In the field it appears as a slow, stiff figure stained with soil and the pallor of long confinement; its movements are deliberate rather than animalistic. Smell: the cold tang of turned earth with a faint metallic note like old iron. Sound: soft, uneven scraping of boots on stone, low whispering at the edge of hearing, and occasionally the creak of a shutter or gate answering its approach. Temperature: a localized, persistent chill that bends breath into mist and frosts nearby blades of grass. Recorded observations emphasize its steady, patient approach rather than frantic bursts of speed.

Revenant Encounter Protocols & Field Notes
Observations
- Fresh disturbance of a gravesite or a set of footprints leading from a grave toward a dwelling with no return trail; accompanied by a sudden, localized drop in temperature and the smell of turned earth.
Encounter Advice
- avoidance: Do not pursue. Keep to well-lit, open ground and avoid solitary travel near old burial sites at dusk or dawn. Close and secure thresholds (doors, windows) and keep hearth fires or lamps burning — flame and light often deter close approach. Keep animals indoors; dogs and birds will often signal its arrival before you see it.
- defense: If confronted, withdraw to consecrated or public ground and summon aid (clergy, community elders, or experienced ritualists). Traditional remedies recorded in field notes include securing the remains so they cannot return (reburial with binding and heavy stones), purification rites or consecration of the burial place, and controlled burning of contaminated garments or items tied to the revenant's purpose. Iron objects, salt lines, and prayers or spoken names have been reported to disrupt its focus long enough to enact protective measures. Above all, avoid lone recklessness—ritual and community action are safer than improvisation.
Revenant Abilities & Powers
- Relentless ReturnIf buried with grievance unresolved, the Revenant reanimates at night to hunt those responsible until slain or its grievance is redressed.
- Mask of the LivingAssumes the outward guise of the deceased to infiltrate kin and households of its killers without immediate detection.
- Grave-claim MarkImposes a funeral pall on chosen victims—chronic nightmares, wasting sickness and escalating misfortune concentrate on those it targets.
- Corpse-FortitudeResists ordinary decay and mundane injury, regenerating or persisting until subjected to fire or specific burial-countermeasures.
Weaknesses & How to Defeat the Revenant
- CremationReducing the body to ash destroys the revenant's anchor and prevents further returns.
- Decapitation and Separate IntermentSevering the head and burying it apart locks the corpse's identity and halts its will to walk.
- Consecrated RiteA formal clerical exorcism or blessing performed over the corpse severs its claim on the living world.
- Face-down Reburial with Heavy StoneTurning the body face-down in its grave and sealing it with stone immobilises its rise until proper rites are observed.
